Here are the lyrics you thought you forgot

Quick notes

-Nursery rhymes help children build their memories, gain conceptual understanding, listening skills, and more.

-Adults can gain the same benefits from singing with children. This can help battle the memory loss that starts after the children are born.

Why nursery rhymes are so important

Nursery rhymes may seem like silly little stories and songs, but they are actually very powerful. The repetition of sounds, the rhyming, the memorization, and the word to image connection build memory and reading comprehension, stronger language skills, and a good reading foundation.

The good news is that they can also improve those things. If you are among the vast majority of parents who believe their brains no longer work right thanks to having kids, nursery rhymes just might be for you, too. Below are four fun nursery rhymes that both you and your child can enjoy.

Miss Polly Had a Dolly

Miss Polly had a dolly
Who was sick, sick, sick
So she called for the doctor
To come quick, quick, quick

The doctor came
With his bag and his hat
And he knocked on the door
With a rat-a-tat-tat.

He looked at the dolly
And he shook his head,
And he said ‘Miss Polly,
Put her straight to bed.’

He wrote on the paper
For a pill, pill, pill
‘I’ll be back in the morning
For the bill, bill, bill.’

The Wheels on the Bus

The wheels on the bus go round and round,
round and round,
round and round. The wheels on the bus go round and round,
all through the town.

The wipers on the bus go Swish, swish, swish;
Swish, swish, swish;
Swish, swish, swish.
The wipers on the bus go Swish, swish, swish,
all through the town.

The horn on the bus goes Beep, beep, beep;
Beep, beep, beep;
Beep, beep, beep.
The horn on the bus goes Beep, beep, beep,
all through the town.

The doors on the bus go open and shut;
Open and shut;
Open and shut.
The doors on the bus go open and shut;
all through the town.

The Driver on the bus says “Move on back,
move on back, move on back;”
The Driver on the bus says “Move on back”,
all through the town.

The babies on the bus say “Wah, wah, wah;
Wah, wah, wah;
Wah, wah, wah”.
The babies on the bus say “Wah, wah, wah”,
all through the town.

The mommies on the bus say “Shush, shush, shush;
Shush, shush, shush;
Shush, shush, shush.”
The mommies on the bus say “Shush, shush, shush”
all through the town.

“Experts in literacy and child development have discovered that if children know eight nursery rhymes by heart by the time they’re four years old, they’re usually among the best readers by the time they’re eight.” -Reading Magic, Mem Fox (2001)

5 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed

Five little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped his head
So Momma called the doctor and the doctor said
No more monkeys jumping on the bed!

Four little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped his head
So Momma called the doctor and the doctor said
No more monkeys jumping on the bed!

Three little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped his head
So Momma called the doctor and the doctor said
No more monkeys jumping on the bed!

Two little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped his head
So Momma called the doctor and the doctor said
No more monkeys jumping on jumping on the bed!

One little monkey jumping on the bed
He fell off and bumped his head
So Momma called the doctor and the doctor said
No more monkeys jumping on the bed!

No little monkeys jumping on the bed
None fell off and bumped his head
So Momma called the doctor and the doctor said
Put those monkeys back in the bed!

5 Little Ducks

Five little ducks
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said

But only four little ducks came back.

The sad mother duck said
“Quack, quack, quack.”
And all of the five little ducks came back.
