While the country stays at home, the air outside is getting cleaner, but the air inside our homes is getting thicker. The EPA cautions that Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is key to our health, and indoor air purifiers are the tools for clean breathing.

The importance of IAQ explained

The EPA says:

“Health effects from indoor air pollutants may be experienced soon after exposure or, possibly, years later.”

The worst offenders for bad IAQ are pet dander, dust in carpets and rugs, mold, pesticides and chemicals, asbestos, cleaning supplies, moisture, and air exchange rate (the flow of outdoor air coming inside).

These are particles that just about everyone has in their home, and when it comes to our families, having them breathe polluted air is just plain unacceptable. Whether you’re looking to clear your allergies, change the smell, cover a large room, or want a smart air purifier, we found the best air purifiers for everybody’s needs.

Honeywell Allergen Remover HPA200 Air Purifier

Best home air purifier for allergies and pet dander

High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) purifiers are considered the “standard” in IAQ technology, and the Honeywell Allergen Remover Air Purifier is top of the line. Honeywell’s manufacturers, who’ve been in business nearly 115 years, made a quality product that gobbles up 99.97% of microscopic particles in the air.

  • What it does best – The Honeywell HEPA Air Purifier is best for people with allergies or pets, because it’s highly effective in collecting dust and odors, mold and smoke, pollen, and of course, pet dander. One of the reasons that’s possible is because this air purifier recirculates air up to five times in the space of an hour.
  • What rooms it works best in – The Honeywell HPA200 Air Purifier is meant for medium sized rooms, such as a small living room, or master bedroom, as it’s able to cover a 310-square-foot room. If you have a bigger room, say 500-square-feet, you can upgrade to the Honeywell HPA300.
  • Price point – The Allergen Remover Air Purifier is very affordable, coming in somewhere between $170-$228. Air filters only need to be changed every 12-to-18 months, and that’ll only cost you around $50-$65 for a three-pack.

Blue Pure 211+ Air Purifier

Best home air purifier for odor and stale air

The Blue Pure 211+ Air Purifier is considered the best air purifier for stale air, or taking away the smell from odor. That’s because it has a filtration system that works in three-parts — one each for carbon particles, fabric, and non-carbon particles. This enables it to be 99% effective in taking particles out of the air.

  • What it does best – For indoor air purifiers, the Blue Pure model is great for old houses and apartments, high occupancy homes, and if there’s smoker in the house. It’s great for pet odors too, or rooms with old carpet and rugs.
  • What rooms it works best in – The Blue Pure 211+ is a powerful home air purifier, as it can tackle rooms up to 540-square-feet. There are more powerful air purifiers on this list, but that’s big enough for a master bedroom, living room, and family room.
  • Price point – The Blue Pure Air Purifier is across the board $299.99. The air filters will cost around $50, and you’ll have to change them out every six months. Don’t need an air purifier that covers such a big room? Go for the Blue Air 411+ Air Purifier, as it’s great for bedrooms.

Coway Airmega 400 Smart Air Purifier

Best large room air purifier

If you haven’t noticed, the Coway Airmega 400 Smart Air Purifier has the word “mega” in its name, and there’s a good reason for that. If your indoor air purifier needs require one that can cover a large room, the Airmega is your pick, as it captures 99.97% of particles in rooms over 1,500-square-feet.

  • What it does best – The Airmega 400 Air Purifier claims to be able to capture particles in rooms up to 1,560-square-feet. Not only can it do that, but it can recirculate the air twice in an hour. It’s also smart, as it adjusts itself depending on the quality of the air, and gives you feedback on its’ readings with a multi-colored LED light.
  • What rooms it works best in – This is the perfect air purifier for a large living or family room, and open concept homes. This is not your bedroom unit (and if it is, compliments), as it’s your entire indoors air purifier.
  • Price point – The Coway Airmega comes in somewhere between $569-$649. If you’re running the Airmega in a large room, then air filters will need to be replaced every 12 months, and cost around $130.

Dyson Pure Cool Air Purifier and Tower Fan

Smartest air purifier (and safest)

When you get a product from Dyson, you already know it’s going to be quality. In this case, not only is the Dyson Pure Cool Tower Fan quality, disposing of 99.97% of particles, but it’s also a smart air purifier. Truth be told, it’s also the best looking air purifier on the market.

  • What it does best – Use the Dyson app to adjust up 10 different settings, and receive reports on temperature, humidity, air quality, and even allergen particle levels. It’s so smart that it also understands voice commands, as you can sync it with Alexa.
  • What rooms it works best in – The Dyson Tower Fan doesn’t have any accessible blades, so it’s a fantastic air purifier for homes with little kiddos. It’s also a great air purifier for play rooms, living rooms, and bedrooms.
  • Price point – The Dyson Pure Cool Tower Fan will cost you around $520-$549. Air filters are pretty low maintenance, as you’ll need to replace them every 12 months, and they cost somewhere between $60-$80.

Molekule Air with PECO technology

Best air purifier technology

Every single home air purifier you just read about uses HEPA technology, but the next generation in quality can be found in Photo Electrochemical Oxidation, or PECO technology. That’s where the PECO Air Purifier comes in, as Molekule created a product that attacks air particles, rather than collecting them.

  • What it does best – When an allergen, piece of dust, or really any particle comes into contact withe the Molekule Air Purifier, it breaks the particle apart. It’s so effective, that it can destroy particles up to 1,000 times smaller than HEPA air purifiers.
  • What rooms it works best in – The Molekule Air with PECO technology is effective up to 600-square-feet, making it serviceable for most large rooms, such as your living room and family room. If you want a smaller one, such as a bedroom air purifier, then go with the Air Mini (250-square-feet).
  • Price point – The Molekule Air Purifier is the most effective air purifier on the market, but that comes with a cost, as it’s $799 anywhere you shop. Air filters cost $80, and need to be replaced every six months (pay for a year up front and two will cost you $130).
