Congratulations, it’s a….lemon!

Your baby is currently as big as a lemon, and you can finally breathe a sigh of relief that you’re past the first trimester!  You might be surprised to know that your baby now has teeth, vocal cords, and even fingerprints.

Many parents now believe that they’re in the “safe zone” to tell others about their little bun in the oven.  Of course, whatever you choose is a personal decision, but know that you are now officially 1/3 of the way through your pregnancy.

Your baby now measures at about 2.9 inches long and weighs a little less than an ounce.  Your morning sickness may be lessening a bit by the third month of pregnancy, and you may be feeling less tired.

If you are the lucky mommy of multiples, however, you might still have trouble with fatigue and nausea.  If these symptoms are severe and inhibiting your nourishment or weight gain, be sure to tell your doctor, as there are pregnancy-safe medications for these problems.

What are some common 13 weeks pregnant symptoms?

You may have some new pregnancy symptoms though at 13 weeks along, such as an increase in energy and sex drive and more visible veins due to your increased blood flow.  You might take advantage of your new surge of energy and get back into an exercise routine for the benefit of you and your baby.

If you indulge in more sex in this stage of the pregnancy, be sure to note if you have any post-roll-in-the-hay spotting, which is normal.  However, if you have more blood than just a little mild spotting or any cramping at 13 weeks pregnant, be sure to call your doctor, because this could indicate a problem.

You should also be starting to look pregnant at this stage in the game, so be sure that your healthy weight gain in on track.  The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends a total weight gain of  28-40lbs if you started out the pregnancy underweight, a total weight gain of 25-35lbs if you started out at an average weight, and 11-20lbs if you were obese to begin with.

How much weight should I gain?

Be sure to consult with your OB/GYN about your pregnancy weight gain goals, and they can show you on a BMI chart where you rank at the outset of your pregnancy.  Weight gain during pregnancy should be slow and steady to maintain the health of you and your bundle of joy.

Of course, if you are having twins, your pregnancy weight gain is expected to be more, around 37-54lbs total.  It is recommended that you eat a wide variety of healthy foods during your pregnancy, and add about 300 calories per day to your pre-pregnancy diet.

At your 13-week ultrasound, you may even get to know what the gender of your baby is, and this is the time to have testing for chromosomal abnormalities if that is what you have decided to do.  This is also the time to begin planning for the arrival of your new baby by informing your boss of your pregnancy, preparing your children for the new baby, and planning for future child-care if you are a working mother.

This is an exciting time in your life for sure, but the most important thing for you to do at 13 weeks pregnant for your health and your new baby’s health is to take good care of yourself.  Get enough rest, eat nutritiously, exercise, and ask for help if you need it.
